Welcome to our Newest Members and Congratulations to our members celebrating milestone anniversaries!
August is typically a time where state and federal elected officials are on recess and preparing for the fall sessions. While this year is no exception, it does not mean we are taking a break representing your interests. Over the summer, ABC of Pennsylvania staff will be working on internal and externals affairs.
Our facilitated strategic planning will take place on September 15 and 16 at the Chapter facility. These sessions will include all board members, committee chairs, staff and any members who would like to participate. Yes, we want you, the members of your Chapter, to be part of developing the big “What’s Next” for ABC Keystone. We only ask two things: be present for the entirety of the sessions and come with ideas and an open mind.

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced the 2021 STEP Safety Management System participants and recognized its 2021 OSHA Partners on Tuesday, August 17, during ABC Keystone’s Safety Recognition Breakfast presented by Cohen Seglias Pallas Greenhall & Furman PC. During the event, representatives from Keystone Chapter member companies had the opportunity to hear remarks from Kevin Chambers, Area Director, U.S. Department of Labor OSHA – Harrisburg Area Office.
Meet Carson Mowery, Junior Estimator, Meadow Valley Electric, Inc., and ABC Keystone YP Committee Member
What role do you play in your organization?
I’m a Junior Estimator with Meadow Valley Electric, Inc. in Ephrata. I started in this position almost two years ago after working in electrical distribution. I set up bid folders for the estimators and work on getting the power and lighting counts together in preparation for sending them out for pricing from our vendors. Once the counts are completed, I put the totals together in RFPs to our vendors. I contribute to the bid process by assisting the main estimator in measuring and determining the lengths of conduit and wire. My work is completed under the guidance and training of an experienced estimator. Read more…
To my fellow construction industry friends: is it just me, or are you, too, sensing an unfair trend in the policies and practices of the current administration? It sure seems like they are creating an atmosphere that is highly toxic for free enterprise!
I ask you to consider a current bill that is requiring all large government jobs to have a PLA (Project Labor Agreement). Simply interpreted, this means that only union contractors may bid the job. The ramifications of this are obvious – the end of free enterprise as we know it! The passage of this bill means that over 80% of contractors are unable to bid government jobs, and for ABC especially, this is unacceptable.
When there are member needs to be met, ABC Keystone steps up. The board of directors and committee members are directly responsible for driving the association forward and having the foresight to anticipate future needs.
The most tangible representation of this commitment to forward-thinking is our training facility. When you drive up to headquarters today, you are greeted by a 31,000 square foot facility that is often filled with the sounds of hands-on apprenticeship training in the shop, career development classes in spaces such as the state-of-the-art multimedia room, and possibly even middle school and high school students attending career exploration events and pre-apprenticeship classes respectively.
The legislature is in recess through the end of September, which provides time for the government affairs team to prepare for the fall session and map out future strategies. In October, we are planning the first in-person advocacy event since the COVID-19 shutdown. ABC members will have an opportunity to meet directly with key legislators in Harrisburg to advocate for policy priorities that impact the construction industry.
In addition to communicating directly with legislators, it is important that ABC financially support free enterprise candidates. There are important seats up for election in the 2022 cycle, and there is no doubt Pennsylvania will be a key state in determining the majorities in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate.

It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through 2021, and we are beginning to think about 2022. During the last 16 months, things felt like they would never get back to normal, yet the time flew by quite quickly. So, how have the first six months of 2021 turned out, and what is in store moving forward for ABC Keystone?
Potential. Despite being a relatively simple word, the word ‘Potential’ has many meanings. By definition, potential can refer to having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future. It can also be described as latent qualities or abilities that may be developed and lead to future success or usefulness. Something I found interesting when working on this article were all the similar words associated with potential: Possibilities. Prospects. Promise. Capability. Talent. Power.

As a Young Professional, how has your involvement with ABC Keystone helped you?
My involvement in the Young Professional Committee has been great during my time with ABC. I feel that anything that brings people together and discusses issues or experiences as a group is a very helpful experience, especially throughout this pandemic, where we’ve all been thrown into similar difficult situations. It is the feeling of community and comradery that I enjoy most about the Young Professionals Committee.
Safety professionals understand the importance of having effective written safety plans. An effective written plan helps alleviate any misunderstandings regarding the expectations necessary to protect employees performing work tasks. Unfortunately, all too often, a written plan is created, but adherence to the plan falters. There is nothing more damaging to a company than non-compliance with company policies. Non-compliance quickly creates an environment that devolves into a “us against them” way of thinking. Cliques begin to form. Morale can erode, and inconsistencies form that open companies up to liability issues.
