As a Young Professional, how has your involvement with ABC Keystone helped you?
I am involved with ABC because I love opportunities to learn and develop my professional and personal skills. ABC gives me the opportunity to meet new people, network, and gain new skills. I get to learn things about all the many facets of construction. ABC also offers a place for me to volunteer, which I’ve always enjoyed.
As we enter the home stretch of 2020, we near the conclusion of a three-year strategic plan that brought us to where we are today. We have had success in working on our goals in the arena of government affairs, workforce development and growing and delivering value to our members in education, safety and other services.
The COVID-19 pandemic, the ensuing public health issues, and the economic shutdown have been front and center in most of our lives since the end of February this year. President Trump, the CDC and Congress issued many new guidelines and restrictions to control the spread of the virus. Many of these federal mandates were designed to allow for state or local representatives to enact additional restrictions based on the regional virus outbreak as needed. In March, our Pennsylvania Governor closed schools, ordered citizens to shelter at home, and closed all “non-essential” businesses.
Effective on Wednesday, October 7, all construction industry employers will be required to use the E-Verify system to confirm workers are legally permitted to work in the United States.
(MANHEIM, Pa.) Five local apprentices received top scores at the ABC Keystone Annual Craft Competition on Saturday, September 26, 2020, held at the Chapter’s training facility in Manheim. Earning the top scores in their respective trades provides these apprentices the opportunity to move on to the 2021 ABC National Craft Competition (NCC) to be held March 9-11, 2021, in Gaylord, Texas. This year, two of the Chapter’s carpentry apprentices received tied scores, and both with be joining ABC Keystone’s NCC team in March.

(MANHEIM, Pa.) The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced the recipients of its 2020 Safety Training & Evaluation Process (STEP) Awards and recognized its 2020 OSHA Partners on Tuesday, September 15, in celebration of National Safety Week.
This is likely not the first article you have read about workforce development efforts and pre-apprenticeship at ABC Keystone, the latter something we’ve focused on for the last two years. It is certainly not the first article I have written about the topic. But there is one thing about this article makes it very different. In this article, I get to share how our program has increased the talent pipeline.

I enjoy meeting people in the industry and learning more about what people do outside of just the accounting for the business. I look forward to getting back together and networking after the pandemic.

How does ABC provide you value?
ABC Keystone is a great partner for Penn Waste, Inc. because we are both so tightly woven in the community that it promotes a common bond with the membership. We have the opportunity to network with members and share in the questions, issues and concerns of the construction industry.
We are several months into this wild ride – emotionally drained, frazzled, short-tempered, and less patient – all in the same storm, but not necessarily on the same boat.
Construction companies typically operate at a frantic pace this time of year. Contracted work deadlines are looming, field crews and project managers are being pushed for production, estimators are working on change orders and backlog for next year. It can be a very chaotic time.Typically, leaders are so far in the trenches right now, that they miss an opportunity. Now is the best time to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your business. When put under pressure and examined, the cracks in the foundation of a business will show themselves.
Often it is said, “the top is a lonely place to be.” For legislators representing the south central part of the Commonwealth, that could not be further from the truth. Our region is extremely fortunate to have experienced and respected lawmakers serving in leadership capacities and chairing committees that have jurisdiction over our issues.
