Qualified Signal / Rigger Certification Course

December 20, 2017  / 7:30 am – 4:30 pm

Construction projects inherently require objects to be moved, hoisted and relocated. These tasks are often performed using a “rig.” Failures of the rigging arrangements are common when riggers don’t understand capacity aspects of the equipment they are using and/or make a “bad” rig.

The purpose of this program is to give participants the information they need to make a good rig. Rigging is so important in the construction field, but is often overlooked. Sometimes hook-ups can work, without the user really understanding what they are doing – but this does not mean the operation is safe.

Consider failed rigging outcomes: A broken sling? A broken product? A broken skull?

This topic is just too important to do it wrong!

Benefits of Attending:

Test your rigging knowledge. If your crew is rigging loads and can’t answer these questions completely, they need to attend this program! Gain answers to these questions:

  • Why is the rating for a basket-hitch almost always over-stated?
  • What do most riggers do that reduces the capacity of a choker hitch unnecessarily?
  • What is the hand signal for boom-out on a hydraulic crane?
  • Why is the rigger most likely to be killed during a hoisting operation?
  • When can a safety latch be disabled? (The answer isn’t ‘never’)
  • Which sling type does not require a capacity tag?
  • What type and grade chain must be used for hoisting operations?

Each participate will receive sample load charts and materials that they can use in the field every day.

Develop Your Knowledge and Learn More About:

  • Rigging hazards.
  • Rigging equipment and types of slings.
  • Determining load weights.
  • Load angles and how they affect the rigging.
  • Selection of an appropriate rig for the load.
  • How to inspect slings, hooks and rigging equipment for damage.
  • Using ANSI Hand Signals.
  • Review of hardware and rating requirements.

Who Should Attend:

Anyone and everyone who connects a load to a crane, hoist, backhoe, pulley system should attend this program. If you are a supervisor or project manager who has been charged with safety oversight for your project (as you should be), this course is for you.

This course is ideal for individuals working as project managers, supervisors, safety coordinators, management officials and safety committee members.

Basic math and calculator skills are required. Awareness of rigging and hoisting practices is helpful.
