FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 25, 2018

(MANHEIM, PA.) The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recognized local member contractor firms for both top safety efforts and work performed on area construction projects during the 29th annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Gala. The Gala was held October 24, 2018, at Spooky Nook Sports, Manheim.

The EIC Overall Safety Awards Competition is open exclusively to STEP Award recipients who have achieved Gold level or higher. The awards recognize companies who exhibit a continued commitment to jobsite safety and whose safety performance and programs are judged to be exemplary.

The 2018 Overall Safety Awards recipients – listed in alpha order – included:

Company, (Company Location), Category

Mowery (Mechanicsburg, PA), General Contractor – Over 50 Employees

RLS Construction Group (Mechanicsburg, PA), General Contractor – Under 50 Employe

The top award of the evening went to the Project of the Year recipient. The criteria for this award were its subjective ‘WOW’ factor in the following areas (in no particular order):

  • Community impact
  • Client satisfaction
  • Design features
  • Positive notoriety or high-profile of the project

The 2018 Project of the Year was awarded to Poole Anderson Construction for their project Give a Child a Voice Fitness Center. The Keystone Chapter congratulates Poole Anderson Construction (Harrisburg), for their Excellence Award submittal of this project in the Community/Public Service category. This project’s story begins with Eric Erdman, a student at Millersburg Area High School on a mission to “start focusing on others” as he began his own battle with brain cancer. He often found sanctuary in working out and requested an estimate to remove bleachers from the school’s gym and install a weight room as his “Make A Wish” gift. Upon hearing this request, executives at Poole Anderson quickly rallied the team and unanimously decided to take on the project in whole, gratis, over summer break.  At the busiest time in the construction year, when they could’ve taken on large projects for profit, they instead decided to carve out prime time in their busy schedule to focus on what they could do and make an impact on this small, rural, underfunded public school and its community.

The Poole Anderson team solicited donor partners and volunteered their own time and resources. They worked at night and on weekends and juggled the schedules of multiple specialty contracting partners to make this happen. Acting as the design/build team on the project, they made Eric – still a high school student – the CEO. It was his wish, his vision that drove the entire process and Poole Anderson was fully committed to him and his dream.

Because of what Poole Anderson did here, a national movement is now underway to help empower all childhood victims of trauma. Through his foundation, T.E.K. Foundation CC, Inc. dba Give A Child A Voice, Eric continues to spearhead projects dedicated to encouraging and influencing positive change in children’s lives. Poole Anderson’s efforts on this project serve as a shining example of what craftsmanship, ingenuity, coming together with community and the “can do, make it happen” spirit that embodies the merit-shop philosophy.
