This course covers various techniques that estimators use to perform quantity takeoffs quickly and accurately to minimize mistakes and omissions. It stresses inclusion of the items required in the front end of the specifications and using the CSI format to organize the takeoffs and estimate to eliminate holes. These are standard practices used by estimators regardless of their discipline or the in-house estimating program they are using. Additionally, the course covers reviewing bids from subcontractors and vendors for completeness to eliminate holes in the estimate. We do this in a simulation of comparing the bids using a spreadsheet to analyze the various combinations to determine the lowest complete price.
This course – part 1 of 2 – introduces the types of cost estimation from the conceptual design phase, to reviewing the bid documents and measuring quantities.
Pricing, the bid process, mock bid, cash flow and project cost estimating are included in part 2.
